My name is Rachel DiCesare, and my coding journey started February 2017 with Skill Crush. I was moving out of my childhood home, and my family was moving on to bigger and better things. While I was sad about this big change, I finally knew I wanted to learn new skills and use my love for computers and creativity to land my dream job.
I grew up with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, which caused me to struggle in school. I often got distracted, and I felt like I was always behind while everyone else was keeping up. I attended community college for a year, but it wasn’t a good match. I felt stuck for a long time about what I wanted to do in my life. I spent time wondering if there would ever be a chance for me to be successful.
This past December, I had the opportunity to visit the Facebook office in New York. I was inspired by the way the employees work together and set up their workspace to brainstorm the next best thing. Seeing this motivated me to search for my calling. I knew I wanted to do something with technology - learning to design and code with Skill Crush has changed my life in so many ways.
Eight months ago, I never would have thought I would be where I am today. Even though I haven’t landed a job yet, I am committed to take more classes, meet awesome techies, attend online office hours and webinars, and brainstorm new projects. I became a part of the Tech Ladies group as a Founding Tech Lady, and now I'm becoming a member of Moms Can: Code! I have bettered myself and wouldn’t change it for anything. My goal is to land a Junior position, either remote or in the New York City area. I would like to also build a startup someday on my own!
For those just starting to code - keep going and don’t give up. You will be so thrilled with how amazing tech skills are to have. There will be errors - but there will also be techies that can fix them, and that will be you.
You can do it!
